Chelsea’s Champions League opener ended in a flat 2–0 defeat to Bayern Munich — a loss that highlighted not just a gap in quality, but a failure of approach.
Maresca’s lineup was cautious, conservative, and almost entirely recycled from last season, apart from João Pedro. The result? Zero risk, zero threat, and zero belief.
Joao Pedro Problem
From the start, Sánchez aimed long balls at Pedro, but he was constantly dispossessed. He created no danger, offered no presence, and on Bayern’s second goal, he was bypassed completely. Ironically, Chelsea’s only goal of the night came while Pedro was down injured, when the advantage was given to Chelsea.
Costly Mistakes
The second goal was self-inflicted. Caicedo hauled down Kane with two hands, gifting Bayern a penalty. A single moment that sealed Chelsea’s humiliation.
All excuses for Maresca and Chelsea need to stop; they didn’t have a proper preseason, and they finished CWC with a trophy on 13 July. The players didn’t have time to fit, but the fact is, they are not good enough at the moment. Bayern was playing against Chelsea.
In the first half, Joao Pedro lost possession of so many balls that he wasn’t a threat, and on the second goal of Bayern Munich, he was left unattended and passed by.
No More Excuses
Yes, Chelsea’s preseason was short after lifting the Club World Cup in July. Yes, players have had limited time to gel. But excuses don’t win Champions League games. Bayern didn’t just beat Chelsea — they played with them, embarrassed them.
Only Robert Sánchez saved the Blues from a heavier scoreline. Without him, the margin could have been ugly.
Chelsea should use their offensive potential, and Enzo Maresca needs to take risks and put in more new signings.

The Bigger Picture
- Enzo Fernandez was supposed to develop into a No. 10, but he failed. Playing him alongside Sestos created two playmakers who neutralised each other. Santos must come in.
- Reece James isn’t a midfielder. At RB, he’s elite; he was very great at England. Gusto isn’t good enough for the level that Chelsea plays.
Delap’s absence is critical. His strength and aggression are very much lacking in Chelsea; he played with Jao Pedro at the beginning of the season, and Chelsea was scoring. He is opening the space, he is strong with a ball, he is very aggressive, and very fast. That is what Chelsea now needs and doesn’t get with Joao Pedro.

What Maresca Must Do
Maresca has to take risks. Trust the new signings, and stop clinging to last year’s lineup.
Suggested XI:
Sánchez
Reece James – Wesley Fofana – Trevor Chalobah – Cucurella
Caicedo – Andrey Santos
Estevão Willian – Palmer – Garnacho/Neto
João Pedro/Guiu
This setup gives Chelsea energy, creativity, and attacking intent.
Final Word
Chelsea needs to stop hiding behind excuses and start playing like contenders. Safety-first football won’t beat Europe’s elite — and if Maresca doesn’t take risks, Chelsea will keep losing. Bring that singing on – not only Joao Pedro.
Santos needs to play, and that is essential at this point for Chelsea.
